Frequently Asked Questions

  • Your prices seem to be higher than others, why is that so?

At Dapur Penyet, we always strive to bring quality value-added Indonesian food to the masses. Therefore, the decision to raise our prices was not an easy one and was thoroughly deliberated - including obtaining feedback from our employees across all levels and from the public like our customers dining in.

Further, our prices have not increased in years and if we could maintain them at the same level, we definitely would. After all, nobody likes to pay more for something and raising prices would technically make us less attractive to our competitors.

But this is a move that we had to take due to rising costs - rent, labour, raw materials etc.

For instance, the ongoing pandemic has brought about a sharp increase in raw material costs - items like chicken, cooking oil, rice, vegetables, eggs, and quite literally everything else (including electricity tariffs) that is used to make our food has increased in price. For example, our usual order of chicken was first increased by a gradual 5% then another 10%, and now another leap of 15-20%, making it a total of an approx 30% jump in less than a year.

This price increase of raw materials also affects our employees’ cost of living and it is also in our best interest to ensure that they earn a liveable and decent wage, and ensure they are not affected or at least minimise the effects of rising costs on them and their loved ones. And with labour shortages in the market, labour costs are higher to attract and retain employees to keep our business running. We do hope you understand where we are coming from.

In the end, every business operates differently and we seek your understanding on this matter.

  • Do you offer chicken thigh or breast options?

Absolutely! For our chicken menu items, we serve both options, though most customers prefer the thigh option. Availability of either option depends on the availability in-store and should either option run out, we sincerely apologise.

  • Are there any major differences between chicken thigh and breast?

For the most part, no. We have customers requesting for chicken breast vice versa and it depends on personal preferences.

However, we should add that there is a tendency for chicken breast to run a little dry and tough at times but this is mostly due to production issues — a term ‘woody breast’ coined by the poultry industry and affects poultry production worldwide. We have stepped quality checks by liaising with our supplier and tweaking our preparation process to combat this issue.

Offering an all thigh only option is something we considered, however we do have customers who really insist on their breast meat. They ask, we deliver.

  • How are your sambal or chilli sauce made?

It is all in-house and we’re proud of it! Mass production of chilli tend to contain preservatives which could affect the flavour profile of the sambal. We adjust our production schedule accordingly to demand to ensure freshness all time!

  • Do you have plans to sell your sambal to retail customers?

It is definitely in the works but again, we are working out some teething issues to ensure what we serve in our restaurants has the same quality and taste that our customers expect from a glass jar.

  • Are you guys Halal certified?

    Yes, we always have been.

You may search and verify our Halal status via MUIS website here. Enter ‘Dapur Penyet’ in the search field and click ‘Search’ under ‘Eating Establishments’.
